Holiday Weekend Results in Slew of Roadway Accidents in Henry County

Posted by Richard Lawson | May 30, 2019 | 0 Comments

According to reports from the Georgia Department of Public Safety, this past Memorial Day Weekend was one of the worst in Georgia history - over doubling the amount of roadway fatalities from last year.

There were almost 400 roadway wrecks reported over the 72 hour period and 17 fatalities.
Many counties were on the list for high-reporting areas.

Henry County was also included in this list. As a Henry County DUI Lawyer, I will cover the consequences of a first DUI in Henry County in today's post as many of the above traffic violations also involved driving under the influence.

First DUI in Henry County

A first DUI in Henry County carries significant consequences. This is why hiring an attorney is of the utmost importance. No one should face both the short term or long term consequences of a DUI conviction on their own. Penalties only increase with each subsequent DUI in Henry County.

Common consequences for a first DUI conviction include:

  • 12 months of probation
  • Fines of $300-$1000
  • 1-10 days in jail
  • 40 hours of community service
  • Alcohol and drug counseling
  • DUI school
  • Treatment program

Under Georgia Law, there are both statutory minimums and maximums for first time DUI offenders. When an individual is convicted of their first DUI, then he or she can expect to face a minimum of 24 hours in jail. After sentencing, you could even be given up to 1 year of jail time to serve. But in most cases the judge will allow a first time DUI offender to serve the sentence on probation.

And as you can tell from the list above, the financial costs of a DUI are large. An individual will be fined as mentioned above, but that along with court costs and charges can add up to be much over $1,000.

Practice Note

As I stated above, no one should attempt to face a DUI charge on their own. Georgia including Henry County has some serious stances on driving under the influence. There are no lesser DUI charges in Georgia.
